We happened to run across ‘Track Packages‘, an iPhone App promising a very convenient way of tracking various mail items shipped with USPS, FedEx, UPS or DHL. Instead of typing in lengthy tracking numbers, ‘Track Packages’ allows the user to scan in the tracking bar-codes right off the parcels. Now that’s convenient! FedEx, DHL, UPS and USPS bar-codes are all supported, along with registered mail and delivery confirmation bar-codes, as well as some others.

‘Track Packages’ may not be the best choice for serial mailers, like eBay sellers, who print their shipping labels at home. But for the casual or random mailer with a need for package tracking, ‘Track Packages’ seems like a match made in heaven. And today, the price for ‘Track Packages’ has been lowered to an attractive $0.99 (from $4.99). Of course, USPS, FedEx, UPS and DHL offer their own free versions of iPhone based tracking. But you have to manage 4 applications and you have to type in lengthy tracking codes, which is not really fun to do. Jewel Publications, the maker of ‘Track Packages’ has shown the ‘Big Four’ what a consumer friendly application can look like. Before we all get too enthusiastic we have to tell our readers that, in lack of an iPhone, we could not test this application. Nevertheless, the current version is at 1.0.5 and the barcode reading SDKs for the iPhone have reached some maturity. Having said this, we expect this application to function reasonably well.
