  *** Update: Sept-23rd 2009 ***

  The French post (La-Poste) is supposed to receive 10.000 electrical vehicles (EV), which make for 25% of their vehicle fleet. This purchase is part of a French government program to purchase a total of 50.000 EVs. The other 40.000 EVs will be used by local government agencies, railroad and electrical energy departments. It is said that the proposal/bidding process is starting this fall. La-Poste has finished a statement of work for their EVs, which will be submitted next week. Rumor has it that Renault is likely to win one of the biddings. Article from LeMonde

    The French government has dedicated $2.2 billion to create a battery-charging network. It has also announced plans to fund the production of a new battery plant of Renault near Paris.

  Rep. Jose E. Serrano (D-N.Y.) wants to put the postal fleet to use during off-hours to help alleviate the nation’s overworked power grids. He introduced a bill Wednesday that would give eventually give $2 billion to the Energy Department and Postal Service to convert current mail trucks or manufacture new ones that use vehicle-to-grid technology or V2G, as it’s known……

  “We have to act quickly to move the USPS to sustainability, both in their operations and for the sake of the environment,” said Serrano, chairman of the House Appropriations subcommittee that handles USPS matters. The Postal Service will lead the world in electric vehicle use if the bill passes, he said. Aides noted that the bill’s introduction was timed to coincide with President Obama’s trip to Copenhagen for the global climate change conference.

  AC Propulsion (who had a hand in developing BMW’s Mini E) and AutoPort will develop a prototype postal EV that will be put into service in the metropolitan Washington D.C. area. The vehicles, all modified from standard Grumman LLV vans (which ride upon modified Chevrolet S-10 chassis), will be used and evaluated by postal workers over the span of one year.

  The vehicles will be converted at AutoPort’s facilities in New Castle, Delaware, where the postal trucks will be stripped of their engines and transmissions and be fitted with an AC Propulsion electric drive system. If tested successfully, the government may begin the electrification of all of its 142,000 postal trucks.

  Electrification of the Postal Service delivery vehicle fleet is practical, achievable and desirable, and should be initiated now.
